 Reading Stem 1

I am reading The Hobbit by J. R. Tolkien. In the story, I have just finished the chapter where The Hobbit is about to go on an adventure, which he was asked to go on by Gandalf, who is an old, crazy wizard. But he doesn’t know what he is in for. I wonder whether he would change his mind and just go back home to the Hobbit hole. I visualize   The Hobbit running to catch up with the dwarves and Gandalf. At this part in the story, Gandalf starts to talk to the Hobbit, I wondered if he would start talking about what he had to do on the adventure, but he didn’t. I am looking forward to knowing what will happen next.

Reading Stem 2

I am reading The Bed and Breakfast Star by Jacqueline Wilson. In the Story, Elsa, a 10 year old girl who likes to tell jokes, has just woken up in the manky Royal hotel. The Royal isn’t at all royal, there are bugs in the bedrooms and it is very dirty. Elsa has to share a room with her half brother and sister also her Mum and her annoying Step Dad, he smacks a lot. The terrible things about it is that it is on the sixth floor and it takes years to trail up and down the stairs because the lift is broken , the bathroom is the size of a bath and there are 3 beds when there are five people . I wonder if Elsa and her family will move to a nicer hotel because this one certainly isn’t nice, I also am thinking that she will somehow become best friends with the girl that sits with her legs in the sink and is always reading. I really like this book and can’t wait to hear the ending.

Reading Stem 3

I am reading the book Thomasina by Paul Gallico. In the book, Thomasina, a peculiar, red cat with green, mysterious eyes , has got terribly ill and needs medical help. I am wondering why she is red with green eyes. I predict that Thomasina will get well again because in the story she isn’t well and a vet is helping her. I hope the story will end like my prediction and that she will get better. Thomasina is a great book and I am finding new, amazing wow words and learning the meanings, for example the word plausible which means believable and the word pandemonium which means madness.

  Reading Stem 4

I have finished reading Best Friends by Jacqueline Wilson. In the story Alice and Gemma are best friends and stick to each other like glue, they are always at each other’s houses and having fun. But one day Alice’s Father gets a job and so Alice has to move away to Scotland. Of course they are both heart broken and want to stay together but their family are really nice to them and that makes things a little better. Gemma and Alice try and stay in touch by writing letters but then Alice says her new friend has a laptop and they can email each other.  But when Gemma actually sees Flora, Alice’s friend, things get a little out of hand . I love this story because of all of the ups and downs in it, it is like a roller coaster and it reminds me of some of my friends. I can visualize every moment of it and it really makes the book even more amazing.

Reading Stem 5

I have finished reading Cookie by Jacqueline Wilson .  Beauty Cookson is no beauty. She’s a plain, timid girl who constantly feels upset and fed up  to the super-confident, snooty girls at school. Worse than the teasing in the playground is, her  hurtful father who is always shouting at her . Beauty and her  sweet mother live in  fear of his fierce rages,( when he is in a bad mood he shouts and shouts at them , that is what makes him feel better ) ,  scared that if they break the rules, (for example not taking your shoes off at the front door or suggesting something very silly like a pet ) ,  Dad will make them so upset that they will just completely cry until they can’t cry anymore  .

Her Dad suggests to have friends round for a sleep over but Beauty doesn’t have any friends  and is worried her Dad will think she is a silly . Then her Dad starts going on about a birthday party and Beauty is really scared that her Dad will make her invite everyone . Most of them are always mean to her , except Rhona who has the meanest best friend ever , she is called Skye and is always calling Beauty Ugly . Then one day , Mum hears  Skye call Beauty Ugly and  she is determined to give her a nicer nickname , she wonders about the name Cookie . So she tries to make cookies and give them to Beauty to give out at school , but she makes them all wrong because she forgot to put sugar in them .

Her Dad asks her what she would like for a birthday present but all  Beauty  wants is a pet .Then her Dad is FURIOUS !  I love this story because of all the twists and turns in the book .  At the beginning of the book , I wondered what was going to happen , after I read about her raging Dad , so I had to read on.

    Hello Charlotte,
thank you for writing such a great reading stem. It shows that you are thinking about your reading, using reading skills,as you read.
I am wondering our of all of these books, which one is your favourite? I know from reading with you in class, that you are especially enjoying reading ‘Thomasina ‘, especially with all those wonderful wow words (which you were great at looking up).
I would like to see you use P.E.E. more in your writing, giving evidence form the text to back up your thinking.
